Science

Year 5

Working Scientifically

Working   scientifically allows children to ask their own questions and make   decisions. Children will observe   changes over time, look for patterns and relationships, identify and classify   things, research and compare ideas using fair testing.

Life Processes:

Pupils are taught   the life processes common to all living things. They will understand the basic biology of   humans in terms of structure and function.   Also to understand what life cycles are in different animals – with a   particular focus on humans. This is   related to health issues such as dental health, diet, smoking and drugs.

Materials and their Properties:

Pupils explore and   learn about the basic properties of materials and relate this to everyday   use. They learn to classify materials   according to their properties.

Physical Processes:

Pupils will learn   about the Earth and beyond, why we have day and night, the seasons and the   phases of the moon.. Pupils learn more   about the Earth’s place in Space.   Pupils will develop knowledge and understanding of forces by   investigating the force of friction, why objects float, gravity and upthrust.

Year 6

Working Scientifically:

Working   scientifically allows children to ask their own questions and make   decisions. Children will observe   change over time, look for patterns and relationships, identify and classify   things, research and compare ideas using fair testing.

Life Processes:

Pupils study how   animals and plants have adapted to their environments and how energy flows in   food chains. They also study evolution   and inheritance and focus on the life and works of scientists such as Charles   Darwin. Children will also learn how   and why living things are classified.

Materials and their Properties:

Pupils learn to   understand basic particle theory differentiate between physical and chemical   reactions;

Physical Processes:

Pupils will extend   their understanding of electrical circuits.   Pupils will also learn about light by investigating their own ideas.

Year 7

Working Scientifically:

Further develop   skills of:

Predicting outcomes   related to scientific knowledge and understanding

Identifying   variables so that you can plan and carry out a fair test

Measure and record   accurately

Present, analyse   and evaluate results

Pupils need to form   a conclusion related to initial predictions and communicate it in a variety   of ways.

These skills are   developed through experimentation within the study areas of:

Life Processes:

Pupils revisit life   processes common to all living things.   To understand the basic structure and function of different types of   cells. They will also learn about the   structure and functions of body systems.   Environmental relationships and reproduction in humans and other   animals. They will learn about variation in animals and plants and understand   why scientists classify organisms.

Materials and their Properties:

Pupils learn to   understand more about particle theory, differentiate between Physical and   Chemical reactions and should be able to give examples. They learn about   Solutions and Acids and Alkalis. They   will extend their knowledge of the partical theory and states of matter.

Physical Processes:

They extend their   knowledge about Forces exploring ideas like density and its relationship with   floating and sinking. The KS3 strategy   encourages pupils to work like a scientist and ask questions and form   opinions based on Science in their everyday lives.

Year 8

Working Scientifically:

Further develop   skills of:

Predicting outcomes   related to scientific knowledge and understanding

Identifying   variables so that you can plan and carry out a fair test

Measuring and   recording accurately

Presenting,   analysing and evaluating results

Form a conclusion   related to initial predictions and communicate it in a variety of ways

These skills are   developed through experimentation within the study areas of:

Life Processes:

Pupils continue to   develop their knowledge and understanding of living things including   Breathing and Circulation, Aerobic and Anaerobic. They also learn how health   can influence lifestyle.

They learn about   the importance of a balanced diet, in processes of digestion and absorption   and where food is used in the cells to release energy in respiration.

They learn about   breathing and gas exchange.

Materials and their Properties

Pupils learn about   the differences between metals and non-metals, how metals react with oxygen,   water and acids to establish a league of reactivity.

Learn about atoms,   elements, compounds and mixtures and the range of separation techniques. They will also have the opportunity to   study rocks, weathering and the rock cycle.

Physical Processes:

Pupils learn more   about Energy transfer, types of energy, sources of energy and the environment   and economic impact of different energy resources, the conservation of   energy, efficiency and dissipation during transfer.

Pupils will extend   their knowledge of electricity, circuits, magnets and electromagnets.

They will also   study motional pressure which will extend their knowledge of forces.
